A family portrait session, photographed in the comfort of your own home or property, can be a great option when it comes to choosing a location for your session. I had a really great time photographing this family’s reunion, with three generations — and three families — enjoying an early morning together in their wooded backyard. If you have an appropriate outdoor space, at-home sessions offer fantastic benefits, especially if little ones are attending the session. With a session at home, there’s no bundling everyone into the car to travel to a location — no hustling the kids and tiring them with a drive. With group sessions, families can take turns resting indoors or keeping the kids occupied until it’s their time in front of the camera. Snacks, a change of clothes, or a run to the restroom are all within reach. And by shooting in your very own space, we are incorporating surroundings that have meaning to you and are often a big part of your memories. Most of all, family sessions in your yard afford you the privacy to really be yourself.

At-home photo shoots can also pair well with morning sessions. Kids are often their most energetic and enthusiastic earlier in the day. Morning sessions free up the remainder of your day for other family activities, with less worry having to round up everyone later in the afternoon. Summer mornings are also cooler, and the light can be just as beautiful as that found at day’s end.
