Salem Willows! It’s been a long time since I’ve visited here — long enough to forget just how diverse and alive this park is. First, you have the natural grounds, providing for that wonderful backdrop of willow trees, glowing yellow in the setting sun. Then there’s the waterfront, the piers and jetties, and of course the signature boardwalk arcade and amusement park eateries.

I met J. and his mom here one late weekend afternoon for his senior portrait session, arriving a half hour or so early so I could check out all the scenery and make the most of our time. It was J. who picked Salem Willows for his senior pictures, thinking it a fitting tribute to his parents, who spent time here in their dating years. Not only was J’s choice of location a really fun and thoughtful gesture, but after having his photographs taken in the park, he’s continuing a tradition of making this spot a meaningful one for his family.

As we wrapped our shoot, we ended in true Salem Willows style, with J. challenging his mom to a game of air hockey. Though J. may be sentimental in his choice of portrait location, he was a take no prisoners player and won the game. Better luck next time, mom!
