Wingaersheek Beach Couples Portrait Session
GLOUCESTER FAMILY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER
In the early days of portrait photography, sessions were rigid and posed. To photograph a sharp, non-blurry image, the subject would be required to sit in a chair with their neck placed in an out of sight brace. The idea of the brace was to keep the person in a still, fixed position, because if the subject were to move in the slightest during the long exposure needed to capture the image, the result would be a blurry photo. Early photographic equipment was just not capable of capturing sharp images of life in motion.
Oh how far we have come! Much of today’s portrait photography is the very opposite of stillness. Today’s images celebrate movement, interaction, and energy. Our sessions together are very much about capturing changing moments as they happen, whether you be a couple or a family. To ensure a variety of images in the photo collection you receive, I love capturing two types of images. The first are what most would consider to be “posed” images, where you are arranged in some fashion, sometimes looking at the camera, sometimes not. The second type of images are what can be called “prompted” images, where instead of a specific pose, you’ll be given a prompt: “let’s walk on the beach”, “whisper in her ear”, “grab each other’s arm and cuddle close to one another” or my favorite, “okay, now look at each other”. Very simple direction and guidance that brings about movement and the unexpected, often with laughs and smiles.
So if you enjoy the aesthetic of images that seem natural and unposed, keep in mind most of these images still originate from a place that is posed or prompted in some fashion, and I’d love the chance to share this collaborative experience with you during a session of your very own!
