Wingaersheek Beach Family Portrait Session

GLOUCESTER FAMILY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER

Summer is in the air, and that means a very busy time for family portrait sessions, especially beachside. I enjoyed an hour with this family during their vacation stay along beautiful Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester, and what a great time we all had. The air was just warm enough for an early evening along the water, and by shooting later in the day, we had the sands almost all to ourselves.

With the booking calendar filling up fast, there will be plenty of sessions to photograph this season, which makes for plenty of images to edit, too! So what exactly does image editing — also known as post-processing — mean? In the days of film photography, portrait sessions were fairly formal, with families often posed in one spot and carefully lit with artificial light, even when outdoors. With contemporary portrait sessions, clients desire a combination of both posed and unposed images. Families prefer lifestyle photographs of their loved ones interacting as they are, mobile and exploring a location, their children running about and at play, with minimal direction from the photographer and shot with natural light. The resulting photographs succeed wonderfully at capturing real moments and emotions, but due in part to all of the spontaneous movement, the degree of light and exposure changes considerably over the course of the shoot. Today’s digital photographer is also shooting many more images than you’ll ultimately receive, again to keep pace with a changing subject that isn’t always fixed and certain.

Image Editing is the process of first honing down the large volume of images shot, and then custom adjusting each of those images for color balance, skin tone, and contrast, as well as fine tuning the pictures to match the signature look and aesthetic of the photographer. More than just the 30 or 60 minutes of picture-taking time with your photographer, you’re investing in the many additional hours reserved to curate the images you’ll receive in your final collection.

I look forward to working with all the upcoming families this summer!
