When looking to book maternity portraits, if you already have other children, definitely consider including them in the picture-taking! We’ll still be able to photograph one-on-one images of just you — the parents-to-be — but with your children in attendance, the session becomes a wonderful chance to capture their anticipation and wonder of what’s to come. Also, a family session with all the siblings present is an opportunity to document the dynamics of the family unit before the chapter turns with the arrival of the new baby bundle.

I met this lovely family in the suburbs north of Boston, choosing to photograph their maternity portraits in their very own backyard. Their outdoor space was comforting and private — perfect for a maternity session — surrounded by woodland and fields. Why pile into the car to travel to a different location when you have such a beautiful spot right outside your backdoor? And remember, when photographing family portraits at home, we’re also creating a time capsule of your very own personal space, a space that is often a lasting part of your story and grows with you. Years from now, when reviewing the images, you’ll find just as much enjoyment reminiscing over yourselves as you will marveling at just how much your surroundings have changed. Yes, that one-foot sapling in the yard will one day be twenty-foot pine, and you can thank the photographs for their unfading memory and ability to time travel.
