YORK, MAINE FAMILY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER

One of the perks of on-location portrait photography is getting to visit and explore places I haven’t been before, a perfect example being this wonderful family portrait session at Nubble Lighthouse in York, Maine. Like many family sessions this summer, this extended group was reuniting for vacation, as well as to celebrate their parents’ anniversary. Our initial plan was to use the backyard of their cottage rental, but after discovering the landscaping on the property was in-progress, the family suggested we instead try Nubble Lighthouse just down the street. And to our benefit, what an inspired, scenic change in location this was!

Nubble Lighthouse is a tourist hotspot with a lot of summer visitors competing for parking spaces and photo op spots. But with our session being on a weekday — and a rain passing through shortly before — we were able to stake out a couple of picturesque nooks on the rocky shore for our thirty minute session together. The lingering clouds also made for that perfect soft, light photographers love, so we could position the lighthouse in the background, yet with everyone in the foreground facing the direction of the obscured sun. Another reason why cloudy skies and overcast are always a positive for outdoor natural light photography!
