Seabrook, NH Beach Family Birthday Portrait Session

SEABROOK FAMILY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER

First birthday. Cake smash. On the beach. What a fun idea — and family! We all spent an hour together on the shores of Seabrook, NH, and I’m so glad I was able to connect with this family on the very day of their little girl’s birthday, making the experience all the more memorable.

When shooting with the very little ones, there’s not so much “posing” involved, as there is following the toddler’s spontaneous cues and lead. If it’s time to crawl, it’s time to crawl for me, too. And if playing and splashing in the surf brings a smile to their face, then I’ll be stepping in those waves, too. With toddlers and photo sessions, it’s best to let the kiddos chase their impulse for discovery, as I engage them in a sort of parallel play, observing the moments and anticipating where their interest might take them next. Here and there, we’ll scoop your child up for a family photo together — and then, off they go again.

I always love delivering photos to clients from sessions like these, because the experience as captured by the images can be very different than the actual session experience itself. Kids are kids, and almost always during these sessions, their attention will come and go, they’ll be wiggling away, they can loose steam, and though everyone has fun at the session, it’s natural to wonder if there was success in capturing any useable images. So when families do receive the images and are thrilled with the results, it’s a testament to how wonderfully photography can freeze time and single out those special moments we love.
