SEABROOK FAMILY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER

After a sun-soaked afternoon at the beach, there’s nothing quite like returning to the sands later in the day to take in that last hour before sunset. The swimsuits and coolers have been put away. The crowds thin. It’s an ideal time for families to return — not to dive in again with the waves — but to wind down and relax along the dunes with each other.

While enjoying their summer getaway at Seabrook Beach just south of Hampton, this family made time for this very sort of togetherness by coordinating everyone for a family photo session. I had actually photographed some of their other extended family members last year, and I was so pleased to hear this group sought me out on the basis of that referral. Due in large part to this family’s welcoming attitude and good spirits, we were able to share the time with everyone in the group and come away with a great collection of photographs. And while the photographs themselves are of course all important, I always want the session itself to be a memorable and enjoyable experience. If the session is fun, relaxed, and allowed to explore the energy as it happens, the images will feel true to character and to the memory of the day.

Portraits at the beach are popular this time of year, and as we work through August and September, the weather is usually at its best for outdoor sessions. When scheduling beach sessions, do keep in mind it’s ideal to meet later in the day closer to sunset. The light that time of day is softer and still abundant, with temperatures that are often more comfortable for everyone, too.
