Boston Commonwealth Ave Engagement Proposal
BOSTON ENGAGEMENT PROPOSAL PHOTOGRAPHER
A surprise engagement proposal at night under the twinkle lights on Boston’s Commonwealth Ave? Sounds great, I’m in! But would there be enough light? I didn’t want to be leaping out of the shadows firing a flash when the big moment was happening, but with this also being a non-repeatable moment I couldn’t afford to miss, I decided to visit Comm Ave with Brett a couple of weeks before to scope out the scene and listen to what he had in mind for the proposal to his fiancée.
As a photographer, it’s always inspiring to try new techniques and locations, but with a session as important as this, a little planning goes a long way. Brett and I walked along Commonwealth Ave and considered the logistics. Where was the best spot? Where were the fairy lights the brightest? I really wanted to photograph the proposal only with the existing lights if possible for an unobtrusive approach and the most natural look. And what if it rained? Please don’t rain! The twinkle lights go dark after April 1st, so if it did pour, I suggested a couple backup locations just in case.
The good news is the skies were dry and the twinkle lights were plenty bright after all — with a high ISO, wide aperture, and steady hand thrown into the mix! As I stood pretending to take pictures of the surrounding brownstones, I could see Brett approaching with his fiancée down the length of the walk, eventually coming to a stop at our agreed-upon point to spring the big surprise. Such a beautiful night, and I’m so happy to have had the chance to share in their moment.
